Street Dialogue is a show exploring our relationships with the environments and the interactions that happen through the application and removal of layers of paint, paper, and other materials. 

 

BIOS

​

Devin Urioste's art speaks directly to what it means to use your voice and self expression as a tool to resist oppression and create a platform for those who have not had the opportunity to do so. Using a variety of materials including spray paint, collage, and found objects, his work not only focuses on the creation process but also its ability to facilitate conversations within his community and throughout Denver.

 

He uses these tools to teach his community how to use their identity as a source of creation as well. Devin has taught his curriculum "Identity, Power, & Art" in multiple spaces including the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art and Rino Art District. Devin continues to direct, facilitate, and create programs for the community not only to make art more accessible to those who do not have the resources, but also to give participants the power to discover who they are.

 

Darin Balaban (b. 1990) is a self-taught visual  artist with a focus on painting, multimedia pieces, and large-scale murals. Growing up in both Los Angeles and Oakland, Darin has a diverse range of influences including bauhaus architecture, street art, modern minimalism and skateboarding culture. His color pallets play with both muted and bright colors to exhibit the range of emotions felt in life as well as reflect the complexities of navigating the world as a mixed race individual in the United States.

 

Darin is considered to be part of the new-wave "post-vandalism" movement which blurs the line between street art tropes and contemporary abstraction. Darin's art practice has led him to exhibit in multiple galleries and lead large-scale projects domestically.

 

Paul Lukes is a multi-disciplinary artist and designer originally hailing from a combination of Taos, NM and various locales across California. He now currently resides in Fort Collins, CO with his wife and two chihuahuas. He’s been creating art of a wide variety since he was a child and prides himself on being able to pull from his various disciplines and mix influences in new and exciting ways. His strong background in graffiti and graphic design and affinity for finding beauty in unexpected places has culminated in his current mixed media body of work and the Street Dialogue concept he came up with.

 

Statement:

Viewing our environments as an extension of ourselves, this latest body of work is my reinterpretation of the found collage and layers I see on city walls on my travels. Having long had a fondness for the happenstance combinations created by the mixture of graffiti, posters, warning notices, stickers and other ephemera, I took it upon myself to recreate that feeling, with a direct connection to those streets I’ve traveled, by pulling my materials from those city walls as well as other places along my journey. In essence, this work is like graffiti in reverse, searching far and wide for layers to remove and make my own work with. Each piece contains many snapshots of moments in my life, layered over each other like the layers applied to city walls. In the same way we communicate with our environments through the application and removal of layers, I am communicating with my work and the viewer through the layers I apply and remove from each piece.
