About

Join us at Alto Gallery (1900 35th St, Suite B, Denver, CO 80216) on Friday, April 3, 6 - 10 PM for the Opening Reception of Repetition & Ritual, a group exhibition featuring works from Colorado South Asian Artists Group and guest curated by Bala Thiagarajan. Free event and refreshments, open to the public. On view April 3 - 25, 2026.

ABOUT
Repetition & Ritual is a group exhibition featuring 29 artworks by 24 artists from the Colorado South Asian Artists Group (C-SAAG). The exhibition explores how repeated gestures, patterns, and processes create meaning in art. Across media—including painting, photography, sculpture, and mixed media—artists use pattern, iteration, and rhythmic structures to build visual language and presence.

The works in the exhibition reflect repetition in many ways: through cosmic cycles and planetary movement, through patterns found in nature and growth, and through recurring motifs and structured forms. Together, the works highlight how repetition functions both as a visual strategy and as a disciplined creative process, transforming simple gestures into complex and resonant compositions.

This exhibition is organized by the Colorado South Asian Artists Group and curated by Bala Thiagarajan.

DATES
Exhibition: April 3 - 25, 2026

Opening Reception: Friday, April 3, 6 - 10 PM

Block Printing Workshop: April 11, 2 - 3 PM
Patterns in Repetition: A Wood Block Printing Experience with Mitra Verma
Participants will explore simple techniques using carved wood blocks, ink, and fabric or paper to create their own unique designs. No experience is needed - just come ready to experiment, print, and enjoy the creative process together.

Mini Mughals Workshop: April 18, 2 - 3 PM
Maha's Mini Mughals: The Mughal Miniatures Reimagined with Maha Kamal
You've seen Mughal miniatures before, even if you didn't know it. (Think the Taj Mahal.) Those impossibly detailed paintings of emperors on elephants, lovers in moonlit gardens, and the occasional drunk princess with fireworks. For centuries, artists in the Mughal courts crafted some of the most intricate, layered, and wildly ambitious small-scale art in human history. But aside from the Taj Mahal, most people don't know who they are. (At least in the West!)

This workshop digs into the visual language of Mughal miniature painting: its motifs, its rules, its beautiful weirdness, and what happens when you drag it all into the present. Maha will walk you through the tradition, show how she remixes it in her own work (including a Mughal-inspired tarot deck, because yes), and then hand you some gouache so you can try your hand at painting Mughal patterns yourself. (Don't worry, it's supervised.)

No experience required. Just show up, learn something wild, and make something small and beautiful.

Free event, materials, and supplies provided. Participation is limited, so please RSVP.

Closing and Artist Talk: Saturday, April 25, 2 - 4 PM

This programming is funded in part by Colorado Creative Industries and National Endowment for the Arts through the Colorado Creats grant.
